Joining the Cuban Revolution

I'M AN OLD MAN NOW BUT, THERE WAS THAT TIME IN WHAT IS NOW THE DISTANT PAST THAT I SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED GOING TO CUBA TO FIGHT IN THE GREAT REVOLUTION AGAINST WHAT WAS CALLED IMPERIAL CAPITALISM.   I WANTED TO JOIN THE CUBAN PATRIOTS UNDER FIDEL CASTRO IN THE SIERRA MAESTRA MOUNTAINS OF THAT COUNTRY.  FORTUNATELY, I NEVER HAD THE FUNDS TO MAKE SUCH A TRIP.  I WAS A COLLEGE STUDENT AND THE WORLD WAS MY OYSTER.  AN OYSTER THAT BEGGED TO BE OPENED TO REVEAL THE BEAUTY  OF WHAT LIES BENEATH THAT CRUSTY SHELL.  A CRUSTY SHELL, I HAVE LEARNED OVER THESE MANY YEARS THAT EXPOSES NOT ONLY THE TRUTH BUT THE REALITY OF THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.   I LOVE THE CUBAN PEOPLE, THE MUSIC, THE FOOD , BUT THE GOVERNMENT SUCKS!

SOME OF YOU MAY BE WONDERING WHY I POSTED THIS.  TRUTH IS THAT YESTERDAY WAS OVER AT THE DAUGHTER'S HOME FOR OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS EVE PARTY AND SPENT SOME TIME WITH MY GRANDSON WHO IS A COLLEGE STUDENT AND ABOUT THE SAME AGE THIS OLD MAN WAS WHEN PLANNING THAT GRAND ADVENTURE TO CUBA.  GUESS WHAT, THE YOUNG MAN IS A BERNIE SANDERS SUPPORTER AND WITHOUT A DOUBT A SOCIALIST.  YES, HE REMINDED ME OF MYSELF AT THAT AGE.  PERHAPS HE SHOULD MOVE TO CUBA AND GET A BIG DOSE OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE IN THAT FAUX UTOPIA AND REAP THE FULL BENEFITS OF LIVING IN A SOCIALIST STATE WHERE EVERYONE IS EQUAL EXCEPT THOSE ON TOP!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I suppose, more than anything else, what changed my mind about Castro and the Revolution was the fact that in the very early 1960's I spent a lot of evenings at "Casa's la Marina" a club in the New Orleans French Quarter where many Cuba refugee's from Cuba hung out. Talking to these true Cuban patriots gave me a keen insight as to what was going on in that island state under Fidel and his fellow travelers!
